Episcopal Church Women
All women who attend St. Philip’s are considered members of the Episcopal Church Women group—or ECW, as it’s usually called—and invited to attend the monthly meetings. This group meets on Monday evenings, typically the 2nd Monday of the month. Each meeting allows time for business and fellowship. Sometimes there is a speaker. The group raises funds for ministries inside and outside the church. Fundraising has included an annual rummage sale in the fall and an “unbake sale” in the spring. Three meetings of the year are food- related: a fall hors d'oevre evening, a Christmas cookie exchange and a June salad dinner. The group also provides a great funeral ministry, supporting families by orchestrating funeral receptions. As a group ECW offers women an opportunity to become active church members and provide community.
Wednesday Book Club
This group meets at church once a week, on Wednesdays at 1 p.m., to discuss a book chosen by a majority of the group. Most of the books are available as a kit from the Rochester Hills Public Library or available for purchase at an inexpensive price. Books chosen by the group cover a variety of themes and topics. Recent novels have included The Glass Castle, Angry Housewives Eating Bon-Bons, The Poisonwood Bible, and The Dogs of Babel. The group is open to anyone in the community. The group discussion is very informal and friendly. The group has even considered expanding from pure discussion to occasionally including a craft.
Tuesday Small Group
This group meets over dinner every other Tuesday night at 6:30 p.m. The group views itself as a combination of women interested in study, discussion, fellowship and intercessory prayer in order to help each woman to understand her faith and inspire her spiritual growth—and share a laugh!. Each member brings her own dinner and discusses books chosen by consensus for their potential to encourage spiritual growth. Recent titles have included Heart Whispers by Elizabeth Canham, Islam, a Short History by Karen Armstrong, The Ragamuffin Gospel by Brennan Manning, and Bad Girls in the Bible. Any woman is welcome to join.
Advent Wreath Workshop: If you don't use an Advent wreath in your home, considering starting the tradition this year. An Advent wreath is a visible reminder of the coming of our Lord, one that helps us keep our focus on the real meaning of Christmas. On Sunday, Nov. 23, there will be a workshop in the undercroft following the 10 a.m. worship service during which you can make an Advent wreath to take home. The cost for all materials is only $10 and can be paid at the door. Sign up on the bulletin board. Please note: there will be no regular Church School for preschoolers through sixth graders that Sunday so that families can make the wreaths together.
