St. Philip's "signature" focus is those that are hungry.  This is reflected in the ministries they serve.

What is it?

Bound Together is an after school tutoring program with special enrichment activities for the disadvantaged children of Pontiac. It operates three days a week – Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday during the school year, following the Pontiac Public School calendar. The site for Bound Together is All Saints Episcopal Church on Pike Street in Pontiac.  The children served are generally between 6 to 12 years of age.  It is a 501c3 non-profit charity that utilizes All Saints facilities but is a separate entity with a separate Board of Directors. The Kids Café is a program within Bound Together that feeds about thirty to fifty children three times a week after tutoring. This feeding program obtains some of the food from Second Harvest, which is a part of the Gleaners Food Bank. The Kid’s Café program also has to buy some of its food. The total food budget is about $24,000 per year. While they are currently funded and well run, they have a need for volunteer help and financial donations to sustain the program. Currently, simple meals are planned by a dietician on a monthly basis, and St. Philips is involved with buying the food for, preparing and serving these meals.

What are we asking people to do?

The children arrive at All Saints around 2:45 PM to start after school tutoring. The children have dinner at approximately 5:00 o’clock and are picked up by their parents after 5:30 PM. We are asking people to help prepare and serve the daily meals; and then, help clean up after the meals are served, three times a week, October through May.   We need people to cover two shifts each day: 3:30 to 5PM; and 4:30 to 6PM. First shift volunteers would help prepare and set-up for the meal. Second shift volunteers would help serve the food and clean-up after the meals. Currently, we believe four volunteers are needed on a daily basis – two for meal prep and setup; and two for serving and clean-up. (Of course people are welcome to work both shifts, thus reducing the total number of people needed on any given day.)

Families are welcome to volunteer as a group, including children that are supervised. Please volunteer by calling the church office or Chuck Tomlinson at 248-652-1844. If you have questions regarding this ministry, Chuck Tomlinson or our parish clergy will be happy to answer them.

For anyone unable to do the food serving and clean-up due to the time of day, we have opportunities for people to buy the food for the meals.   We currently have three and possibly four doing this, which involves several hours on Saturdays for a whole month.  Delivery of the food from St. Philip’s to All Saints is another opportunity to serve, which would take a couple of hours on Monday’s , in the late morning.  Please call Chuck if these alternative jobs are of interest.

Last, but not least is the opportunity to serve as a Tutor.  This would involve a couple of hours on a given day to help the children learn.  More information on this function can be acquired from Paula Zabalavicius, Program Director, @ 248-334-3827.

Crossroads is a social service outreach agency with two locations in Detroit. Founded in 1971, Crossroads exists to support the community at large by providing emergency assistance, advocacy, and counseling to anyone in need.

Acting in partnership with many other agencies, parishes, hospitals, companies and organizations in the metro area, Crossroads offers assistance in the form of a hand-up. We work with our clients to meet their immediate needs and help them assess their situations to lessen the likelihood of future problems. Our efforts are funded by foundations, individuals, and friends who are committed to bringing hope to those living on the edge of despair.

More than 100 volunteers, a small paid staff, and a devoted Board of Trustees keep Crossroads' doors open seven days a week. Donations of time, talent, and resources are always welcome. Crossroads is a tax exempt, 501(c)(3) Michigan corporation. Your contributions are tax deductible under IRS regulations. Thank you for your interest and support.

South Oakland Shelter (SOS)

The purpose of SOS is to help homeless individuals with their immediate needs while they actively work toward more permanent solutions to some form of self sufficiency. Each May our parish hosts SOS for one week. We provide housing at the church, three meals a day and transportation to and from our facility for a group of 25-30 men, women and children. It takes a huge commitment and tremendous coordination to make this short, intense week a success. It takes close to 100 people and over $3,000 for the church to help our guests. There are a multitude of ways to be involved in this tremendous effort. For a complete listing or for more information, contact our Administrative Assistant at our church office at 248.651.6188 and she will direct you to the correct person.
